  • Metro Bits 8/22/05
Description: some aspects of the world's subway systems
Comments: From Germany, an amazingly comprehensive "independent and non-profit website" focusing on Metro transit systems. The World Metro List compares over 150 systems. Another section looks at Metro Arts and Architecture with photos from almost 40 worldwide metro stations. And speaking of photos, don't miss Metros with a View. Add a big gallery of metro logos from around the world, plus other resources and information – it's all things metro. Kudos to M. Rohde for putting it all together...

Description: personal website and photoblog of Ethan Trewhitt
Comments: "My camera rarely leaves my side, and when I'm not bothering my friends with the lens in their face, I'm shooting random macros of shiny objects I find interesting." There's three things I really like about Ethan's photoblog (besides all the interesting pics, that is). First, you can choose to view smaller, lower-bandwidth versions of all photos and your preference is stored in a session cookie – nice touch for users with slower connections. You also have a choice between light and dark page backgrounds. Finally, and I really like this – Ethan makes most of the photos available in desktop size. I should mention that the site's not only a photoblog – Ethan calls it a personal website and there's usually more content accompanying his Photo of the Day. Other things too, plus the hPhoto collection, going back to 2002...

  • Forget Magazine 8/5/05
Description: poetry, fiction, reporting and essays not found in mainstream media
Comments: "What we are really after: what we are really after in this publication is the publishing of material that is ignored in the mainstream press and the even the independent news. Anything that has reason and passion." In 2002, it was said that "every writer under 40 is aware of this site." Young writers. Canadian culture. Submissions "that pertain to the interaction, in Canada, between people will be considered the highest rate of priority (before first, if that is possible)." Launched back in February, 2001, there's almost 500 works in the archives (mostly words, some including interesting visual touches) – and don't miss the various About documents for entertaining insight into what makes this litzine tick...  [wood s lot]

    Description: photography of Fernando Angulo
Comments: The photoblog archives go back to the beginning of this year – a real variety of both color and b&w – I love this shot (just one of many). What really drew me into Fernando's work, though, is his black and white photographic portfolio, "the result of a 6 year travel (back and forth) around Brazilian cities." There's 9 essays, or series, and they're all simply superb!  [Brasil Inspired]
