    Description: fotografie
Comments: "My pictures show what money can't buy." Still a work in progress, Places of no return documents "a torn down landscape with abandoned houses and deserted streets" when the expansion of a mining operation resulted in 7,500 people being forced to leave their homes in western Germany. Another series features 39 photos taken in several suburbs of New York City in 1999. "These suburbs impressed me so much, because they were so far away from all the pictures in my mind, when I was thinking about New York City at that time." Johanne, who's also a sculpture artist, certainly has a unique ability to capture the beauty often found in decaying, abandoned places...

Description: art and animation by Sergey Pervushin
Comments: Sit back and enjoy about 3 dozen of the tastiest illustrations you may have seen lately (or ever). Add 3 short (but oh so sweet) animations. From Russia, the works of Sergey Pervushin – amazing stuff!

    Description: photoblog of Balazs Sprenc
Comments: A recent picture taken at dusk caught my attention. It's not just a picture though – it's the result of merging "86 separate images (thirty seconds long exposure each)." Though Balazs "was hoping to see more stars" in the sky, the shot is truly amazing. Back a little over a year ago on the day he started the photoblog, another beauty – easy to get lost in pixels...;~))

    Description: all things visual...
Comments: "We need to start thinking and talking about visualization, not just look at pictures," says Robert Kosara, an Assistant Professor at UNCC. He's a researcher in the field of Information Visualization (InfoVis) who says "there is a blatant lack of reflection in the field." Today's pick is a weblog of sorts, targeted towards students (and potential students) of Vis, containing some interesting food for thought. "What would happen if you were to connect all the ZIP codes in the US in ascending order?" Is is possible to make a visual map of poetry? Maybe not, but as Kosara notes, it at least makes us reflect on what we mean by visualization, an apparently evolving discipline...

Description: enjoying the beauty through photos
Comments: "You will find my own small (and mostly controversial) world in my photography." Marina lives in Germany but her world also includes points in Australia and the USA. Shots of Seattle and an eerie black & white sunset are among many that drew me in. Some interesting self-portraits too...

Description: an exploration of a sculptural landscape where human urges are acted out by half-recognizable, otherworldly surrogate creatures
Comments: "The work reflects my interest in mutated, hybrid forms, and the disjunctive psychological states that they represent." Artist Pete Goldlust focuses mainly on polymer clay sculpture, but that's just the beginning of what you'll see here. Tasty prints and wall drawings, too – and his carved crayons are astounding...

Description: a collection of video art by recognized artists - free for you to download
Comments: "Video art for mobile media." Whether you want to watch online, on your iPod, or another mobile device, the works presented here, from a number of talented video artists, are excellent. I was particularly intrigued by Knowing You, Knowing Me by the site's producer, Nikolaj Recke. It documents an ongoing conversation from about 10 years ago via fax and email, between him and another artist who once inspired him. "I thought I had a story to tell... but stories only exist in stories, and you wouldn't be a part of mine." Creative stuff to go...;~))
